Duncannon FortSituated on a rocky promontory overlooking the approach to Waterford Harbour lies Duncannon Military Fort.

Duncannon Fort has overlooked the village of Duncannon for many years and is built on the site of a much earlier Iron Age promontory fort. Work commenced on Duncannon Fort in 1588 following an order from Queen Elizabeth who not only was concerned about the threat of a Spanish invasion, but was also aware that a Fort at that location could easily control shipping both in and out of Waterford Harbour.

In 1600, the first Governor was appointed and Duncannon Fort became an active military fort, a status which it held for hundreds of years. The Fort has been altered, repaired and restored many times until the British Army ceased to occupy it in 1919 during the War of Independence. The Irish flag was raised over the Fort for the first time in 1921 and following the outbreak of Civil War in 1922, the Fort was partially destroyed by fire and remained derelict and unoccupied until 1939, when it was again restored and once again came into service guarding the approach to Waterford Harbour in World War II.

Duncannon Fort was besieged by Irish Confederate forces a number of times and in 1642, a raiding party from the Fort attacked Loftus Hall (originally called Redmond Hall) and was beaten back with disasterous consequences, Captain Ashton being killed and Lieutenant Esmonde and others having been taken prisoner. The Fort was attacked by Cromwellian forces in 1649, it was struck by the plague in 1650, saw visits from both King James II and William of Orange in 1690 and was visited by Berenger and Barralet in 1780.

Duncannon Fort has an incredible history and apart from receiving visitors or all nationalities on a daily basis, hosts an annual military festival which attracts visitors from far and wide.

Wexford Paranormal first visited Duncannon Fort in 2011 and had a number of experiences in different parts of the complex that we were unable to explain. We have produced a video of our visit which you can find on Youtube here.
